Auditions - The Wedding Singer

Auditions for the November 2010 production of The Wedding Singer will take place on Monday 14 June 2010 at 8.30pm and Thursday 17 June 2010 at 7.30pm.  The venue is Mill Lodge School, Aqueduct Road, Shirley, B90 1BT (see the bottom of the page for map directions).   There may also be further call-back auditions.

All Roles are available for audition.  A description of each character with vocal ranges is given below.  Please telephone Producer, Veronica Walsh, on 0121-705 3914 if you want to audition.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party - until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of the decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

The show is based on the film of the same name, but has its own high-energy musical score which is influenced by many of the popular artists of the 1980's, from Bryan Adams to Billy Joel.

With this in mind, you will need to prepare two contrasting songs of your own choice which are contemporary to the style of The Wedding Singer and show the heart and energy of the 1980s.  The songs can of course be from The Wedding Singer itself, or can be any 1980s pop/rock/ballads/theatre songs that are suitable.  

The Musical Director will have the score to play from at the auditions if you are preparing songs from The Wedding Singer.  If you plan to sing something else, please bring along the piano sheet music or a suitable backing track on CD.

You will also be asked to character-read from the script at the audition and may be given dance moves to try out (so please come in comfortable shoes).

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

ROBBIE HART  -  Age Range: 25 - 35.  Vocal Range: Tenor (B below middle C - Bb above stave)

A musician and lead singer for a New Jersey trio that plays at weddings - the best wedding singer in the business!.  In love with the idea of Love. But all that changes at his own wedding where he gets dumped at the altar. Charismatic, but insecure.  The connection he finds with Julia reinforces his beliefs in love.  Good comic timing required for this role and an ability to play the guitar is desirable, but not essential.  Competent dance required.

JULIA SULLIVAN -  Age Range: 25 - 35.  Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano (G below middle C - D top of stave)

Robbie's friend.  Working at the reception centre, Julia is a sweet, innocent and naive waitress. Desperately hoping that, one day soon her boyfriend Glen will 'pop' the question. But is he really the one for her?  Good comic timing.  Dance ability required.

GLEN GUGLIA  -  Age Range: 30 - 45.  Vocal Range: Baritone (D above middle C - Bb above stave)

Engaged to Julia, but marriage is the least of his concerns. For Glen, life is all about making money and he doesn’t care how he gets it or what he has to sacrifice. He’s the calculating Wall Street type, clean cut and respectable-looking. He is very suave, sophisticated and a little pretentious.

LINDA  -  Age Range: 20 - 30.  Vocal Range: Pop/Rock Belt (A below middle C - D top of stave)

Robbie's trashy, oversexed girlfriend who leaves him at the altar, as she loves the 'old' Robbie before he became a Wedding Singer.  She is the ultimate Rock chick! A Pat Benatar type.  Competent dance required.

HOLLY  -  Age Range: 20 - 30.  Vocal Range: Pop Belt (A below middle C - E top of stave)

She is Julia’s loveable cousin and together they waitress at the Reception Centre where the Wedding Singer performs. She is a free, bubbly and uninhibited twenty-something, setting her sights on any single man.  Confident dance required.

SAMMY -  Age Range: 25 - 35.  Vocal Range: Baritone (D above middle C - Gb top of stave)

Sammy plays bass in the Wedding Band and he is Robbie's best friend. He’s not terribly bright but he is very supportive and means well in all that he does. He is still in love with Holly after they broke up 6 months ago. Constantly trying to be cool and he loves the fashions of 1985. Dance ability required and ability to play Bass Guitar is desirable, but not essential.

GEORGE  -  Age Range:  25 - 35.  Vocal Range: Strong Falsetto (Middle C - G top of stave)

Flamboyantly gay and eccentric, George is Robbie’s other best friend and fellow member of the band (comic role).  Styled on Boy George, he is an adorable character with great comic timing. Dance ability is required.

ROSIE  -  Age Range: 50+.  Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano (Middle C - C middle of stave)

Robbie’s hip, feisty and cool Grandma (comic role). She must have dance ability. Rap ability and maybe even Breakdance !

ENSEMBLE

A strong and vibrant ensemble of singers and dancers of all ages will be needed for this production, including cameos for performers  who can resemble various 80’s icons (Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, Mr. T., Tina Turner, Imelda Marcos, Billy Idol & Cyndi Lauper).  There is also a large selection of other supporting roles within the show.  There are many speaking parts on offer for a busy, active ensemble, incuding DEBBIE, HAROLD, ROSIE, ANGIE, MOOKIE, CRYSTAL, DONATELLA, SHANE, BAD HAIRCUT GUY, BUM AT BAR (small singing role) SIDEBURNS-LADY, TREKKY, LARGE LADY, CHINA CLERK, RICKY, VEGAS AIRLINES AGENT, Wedding Guests, Waiters/Waitresses, Nightclub Dancers, Customers, Shop Assistants etc.
