Gilbert & Sullithon 2010

Former St. Augustine's MTC members Phil and Kathy Lovell are the organisers of a fundraising event for the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal.  The Gilbert & Sullithon will take place on Saturday 13 February 2010 at Birmingham's recently refurbished Town Hall.

Phil and Kathy have now issued information about the event.  In their introduction letter, they write:

The concept of the “Sullithon” is to raise money through the sponsorship of participants in the “Scratch Concert” style event, singing through all thirteen Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, one after another, with only a 10 minute break between each operetta!  Starting at 10.00am on the Saturday this marathon event takes approximately 22 hours to complete, finishing at approximately 8.00am on the Sunday morning.  A good time to get breakfast and go home and sleep!

In 1990 the original marathon Gilbert & Sullithon raised £12,000 for Children in Need!  About 250 people took part from all over Birmingham and the West Midlands (and beyond).  Almost twenty years’ later we have been asked to organise another such event for Birmingham Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Cllr Michael Wilkes and Mrs Vivienne Wilkes, for their chosen charities.  (See separate attachment relating to the charities for 2009-2010.)  To stage the event we have been offered the prestigious, recently refurbished, Birmingham Town Hall as a venue.  With the capacity to hold a few hundred people, not only participant singers and musicians but, seating for a more than adequate sized audience and, therefore, the prospect of raising a lot more money in the process.
